One of the main chapels at Heywood Cemetery has undergone a major refurbishment, following extensive fire damage from an arson attack over two years ago.
The H Bell & Sons team have completed extensive repairs throughout the chapel. The new windows include complex large picture windows in the gable end of the building. Specialist masons with heritage skills reconstructed the stonework to reproduce the original window layouts, before glazing could be installed. Door frames and other features have also required specialist heritage craftspeople to carry out careful repairs and replace damaged parts of the building.
A complete new roof has been built to protect the building from the elements, in keeping with the original design of this impressive chapel. The cemetery has been in use since 1856 so it was important to retain the chapel’s historic origins.
Internally, a complete rebuild was needed. The result is a welcoming space with lots of natural light, complemented by high quality fixtures and fittings and updated washroom facilities, with a small kitchen area.
We are very proud of the result, which will serve the Heywood community for many years to come.
